Cricketer Farm in Nether Stowey, Somerset took 15 students from Kilve Court Residential Education Centre near Bridgwater on a cheese tour on Thursday 30th October as part of their half term course. The students spent two hours learning about the cheese making process and viewing different stages of production, as well as understanding how Cricketer Farm has contributed to Nether Stowey’s local community since it was set up in the 1940’s.
Richard Villis, Cheese Production Manager at Cricketer Farm and the tour leader comments: “It was thoroughly enjoyable to have 15 such enthusiastic students at Cricketer Farm. They asked plenty of questions, so the tour was very interactive. We talked about sourcing milk locally, creating different varieties of cheese, the expertise and skill that goes into our award-winning cheeses, storage, packaging and distribution.
“We sent them away with lots of notes and samples of our latest cheese; Mega Cheddar®, which is Cricketer’s first cheese designed specifically for children. It is a mild cheddar cheese packed in sticks which children seem to like eating. We explained that each little stick contains 20% of a child’s Recommended Daily Intake of Omega-3 and that they are completely natural Cheddar cheese, with no flavourings or colourings, made using only the highest quality locally-sourced milk. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating - the students really enjoyed product testing! Maybe one day we’ll see some of the students again for work experience or a job!”
